7 April 2007: Second egg

6 April 2007: The first egg!

April 8th, 2007

When the female rises the first egg becomes visible. She must have laid it sometime during the night, it wasn’t there when she went to sleep. The female leaves the nest around half past seven, but returns half an hour later to grab an extra 40 minutes of sleep. Shortly after, the male and female perform their little bonding ritual (see the movie), but with a difference. The male stays longer in the nest and seems to look at the egg. The female makes a submissive gesture this time, and vibrates her wings. She did that also outdoors, during the courtship. In the picture, the male is on the left, the female on the right in the dark.

During the morning, the female keeps bringing in hairs, the egg is soon covered with a layer of fluff. In the afternoon she only visits once or twice. Around 8 o’clock she turns in again.

5 April 2007: More nestbuilding

April 5th, 2007

The female rose and left the nest at about 7:15. In the morning the female visits the nest about twelve times, bringing hairs and other soft materials to line the nest with. In the afternoon, everything stays quiet. The pair perform their little bonding ritual twice, around noon and around 6. Around 8 o’clock the female comes in and sleeps for the third day in a row.

April 5th, 2007

During the morning, the female brings in nestmaterial, mostly soft materials like hair for the lining of the nest. In the afternoon, the mail visits the nest every hour or so, looking for and calling to the female, but she is nowhere to be seen. Around 8 o’clock she arrives, and goes to sleep.

4 April 2007: The bonding ritual

April 5th, 2007

2 or 3 times a day this bonding ritual takes place: The male enters the nest, whistles to the female, the female enters and the male leaves. The female inspects the nest, and then also leaves. They chatter constantly to eachother.

4 April 2007: Female wakes up

April 5th, 2007

The female wakes up, makes up (her feathers) and then leaves the nest.
